| From the earliest days, Orange County had a County Home, also known as the County Farm, Poor Farm, County Infirmary and County Asylum. A home for those who
had none, supported by
the county. Upon death, some were buried in county cemeteries by
relatives. Others were interred on the County Home property, in a
cemetery known as Potter's Field. Only one idenfitiable marker remains,
that of Joseph and Eliza Luttrell. The building is currently a private residence. From the DAR cemetery records: "The present county farm was purchased in 1842. The small burial place, across the public road opposite the farm buildings, has an iron fence of pleasing design, which once marked the boundary of the court house yard in Paoli. There are about 50 graves, but one of which has a stone with inscription. No record of burials has been kept. Known to be buried there is Owen Stewart, who wandered into Paoli in 1862, and was suspected of being a spy at first. He was befriended by Daniel Dayhuff, and lived at the Dayhuff House for many years as a helper. A well-known character about town, he was thought to have been a sea-faring man, who has suffered a head injury which caused loss of memory. His latter years were spent at the county farm. Owen Stewart was living with the Dayhuff family in the 1870 census, age 37, occupation laborer, born in Ireland. In the 1880 census, also living with the Dayhuffs; age 45; occupation servant; birthplace Ireland, as well as parents' birthplaces." In 1991 Derrill Ray Wilson researched County Home and death records, in an effort to identify those buried in "Potter's Field".
